Gothic Influences of The Monk on ââ¬ÅThe Fall of the House of Usherââ¬Â - Literature Essay Samples
Matthew Lewisââ¬â¢ The Monk, published in 1796, built on the Gothic tradition established by the earliest authors in the genre, including Horace Walpole and Ann Radcliffe. Although it was not the first Gothic novel, it was one of the earliest and certainly the most scandalous of its period, and had lasting effects on the genre, from soon after it was published through the present. The Monkââ¬â¢s influences on the Gothic genre are evident in Edgar Allen Poeââ¬â¢s 1839 short story, ââ¬Å"The Fall of the House of Usher.â⬠This novel and story share themes of dark and eerie settings, the supernatural, and familial relationships. Lewisââ¬â¢ The Monk takes place in its contemporary setting of late eighteenth century Madrid (which the author provides thinly veiled political commentary about, particularly regarding the Spanish Inquisition) and intertwines multiple narratives. These include the love story of Antonia and Don Lorenzo, his nun sisterââ¬â¢s pregnancy and her punishment, her loverââ¬â¢s adventures and quest to reunite with her, the pious monk Ambrosioââ¬â¢s discovery that his most trusted mentee is a woman, who seduces him, and Ambrosioââ¬â¢s violation of Antonia and literal fall from grace. The multitude of storylines culminates at the conclusion, when Matilda, the false monk, promises Ambrosio that he can escape execution by Inquisition officials if he agrees to sell his soul to the devil. The devil rescues the monk, but he reveals that Matilda was a demon sent to torture him and that Elvira was his mother, making Antonia his sister. He finally feeds the monk to eagles, which tear his body apart and drop him to his death on sharp rocks. Lewisââ¬â¢ approach to setting is particularly interesting because there are many settings throughout the novel that defy traditional Gothic stereotypes. Several of the side plots, including those detailing Antoniaââ¬â¢s family or Don Raymond, take place in typical houses or outdoors in temperate weather. However, Lewis writes Ambrosio almost exclusively in typical Gothic settings, including his small monastery chambers outdoors at night. As the plot lines converge, these settings become more dominant in the narrative, culminating in the cavern beneath the convent. The reader is made to feel wary as soon as Lorenzo enters from the line, ââ¬Å"They at length were bewildered by the labyrinth of passagesâ⬠(Lewis 309). In this scene, Agnes is found trapped in a hidden tomb in the sepulchre by Lorenzo and his companions, clutching her infantââ¬â¢s corpse and barely clinging to life, while Ambrosio rapes Antonia nearby and stabs her in the chest just before he is found by t he Inquisitors. One of the best examples of setting comes from Lewisââ¬â¢ use of light and darkness to describe the terrifying atmosphere of the tomb in which Agnes is concealed. Lewis writes, ââ¬Å"The horrors of a narrow gloomy dungeon formed in one side of the cavernâ⬠¦Coldly played the light upon the damp walls, whose dew-stained surface gave back a feeble reflection. A thick and pestilential fog clouded the height of the vaulted dungeonâ⬠(316). This use of a creepy, religious setting is extremely important to consider when discussing Lewisââ¬â¢ use of the supernatural. The Monk is rife with supernatural elements throughout, and each one has a religious aspect to it, which contributes to the book being largely about religion itself. The first instance of the supernatural is manifested in Lorenzoââ¬â¢s dream, which perhaps stemmed from his guilt about his impure thoughts regarding Antonia. This theme of guilt and the religious supernatural is carried through the novel, which is most evident when Elvira appears as a ghost to Ambrosio and at the end when he sells his soul to the devil. As Peter Brooks argues in his article, ââ¬Å"The Monk: Virtue and Terror,â⬠ââ¬Å"The problem of the Sacred in The Monk comes to crisis in its ethical relation, in the problem of guilt and its definitionâ⬠(251). The initial skepticism of some of the characters toward these forces supposed to be beyond their control leads to their pain and punishment. Brooks uses the example of Raymond and Agnesââ¬â¢ decision to imitate the Bleeding Nun to facilitate A gnesââ¬â¢ escape from her convent to show how mocking the spirit world can have dire consequences. He posits that ââ¬Å"the forces which we deny, mock, put down, are precisely those that assert their reality and smite usâ⬠¦It is in fact possible to specify within this episode the point of intersection of the natural world and the supernatural, the moment at which the natural yields, cedes, gives way to the imperative solicitations of the supernaturalâ⬠(254-255). Some of the most powerful examples of supernatural elements in this novel are told through the lens of family. The initial scene in The Monk sets a precedent for the rest of the novel, as it is centered around the young Antonia and her aunt, Leonella, who go to the church to hear Ambrosio preach. The Gothic theme of familial relationships is present in some form in nearly every occurrence in the novel, from Elviraââ¬â¢s protectiveness over Antonia to Lorenzoââ¬â¢s reunion with his sister and her deceased child. The most notable and disturbing relationship in The Monk is, of course, that between Ambrosio and Antonia. Elviraââ¬â¢s supernatural premonition that ââ¬Å"Antonia [was] on the verge of a precipiceâ⬠¦[shrieking] ââ¬ËSave me, mother! Save me!ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ saved her daughter from Ambrosioââ¬â¢s first attempt at sexual assault (Lewis 261). When he is caught by Elvira, who threatens to expose his sins to the entire town, he strangles her to death. Brooks explains why this is a turning point of the novel when he writes that, ââ¬Å"A notable moment is the murder of Elv iraâ⬠¦a moment of frenetic passion which culminates: ââ¬ËAmbrosio beheld before him that once noble and majestic form, now become a corse, cold, senseless, and disgustingââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ ¦and the object which he sought to gain by the murder, Antonias possession, now equally appears to him an object of disgustâ⬠(259). Another reason for this disgust could be Ambrosioââ¬â¢s supernatural sense that Antonia was connected to him, as it is later revealed that he was the young son who Elvira believed had died in Cuba. These themes are also prevalent in the later Gothic publication, Poeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Fall of the House of Usher.â⬠ââ¬Å"The Fall of the House of Usherâ⬠follows an unnamed narratorââ¬â¢s visit to his physically and mentally ailing friend, Roderick Usher, at his dilapidating family mansion. The narrator soon learns that Usher is suffering from a sensory overload and a sense of impending doom as he fears that his sister, Madeline, will soon die, leaving him alone to face the end of the Usher family line. When Madeline dies, Roderick elects to keep her in a vault in the house for two weeks before she is buried. On a stormy night, Madeline, who is revealed to be Roderickââ¬â¢s twin, appears at the door, emaciated from escaping her tomb. She falls onto her brother, and as they both meet their ends, the house cleaves along a fissure which divides it into halves and falls as the narrator barely escapes. One of the most common and easily notable aspects that weaves its way through Gothic literature is a dark and gloomy setting. Although this idea does not appear to require as much examination, these settings often come alive (sometimes literally) and contribute substantially to deeper themes in the story, and the titular House of Usher is no exception. According to the article ââ¬Å"Elements of the Early Gothic in E.A. Poeââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËThe Fall of the House of Usherââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ by Stefan P. Pajovic, ââ¬Å"the unnamed author rides on ââ¬Å"a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the yearâ⬠(Poe 1961: 83). It is the very first sentence that introduces the atmosphere of a horror storyâ⬠(188). Unlike many of its predecessors, this storyââ¬â¢s home is not a castle, rather the narrator describes looking upon ââ¬Å"a mere house, and the simple landscape features of the domainââ¬â upon the bleak wallsââ¬âupon the vacant eye-like windowsââ¬â upon a few rank sedgesââ¬âand upon a few white trunks of decayed treesâ⬠(3). However, this lack of grandeur contributes to the haunting effect and the narratorââ¬â¢s feelings of foreboding. The brief mention of ââ¬Å"a barely perceptible fissure, which, extending from the roof of the building in front, made its way down the wall in a zigzag directionâ⬠sounds as if it may be merely another undesirable detail of the dingy residence until the final paragraph of the story reveals a frightening twist of events and the entire house divides at this crack and falls (6, 25). Here the importance of the setting becomes overwhelmingly clear, as the fissure is a physical manifestation of the Usher siblingsââ¬â¢ relationship. This scene is not only important when discussing the setting of the story, but the fissure is also one of its most important supernatural elements. Although they are not as numerous, nor as explicitly stated as in The Monk, there are many supernatural themes throughout ââ¬Å"The Fall of the House of Usher.â⬠As the narrator reads Sir Launcelot Canningââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Mad Tristâ⬠to Roderick, he begins to hear strange noises, but assumes that he is paranoid and imagining things, influenced by his companion. However, his suspicions are concerned when Poe writes, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦there could be no doubt whatever that, in this instance, I did actually hearâ⬠¦a low and apparently distant, but harsh, protracted, and most unusual screaming or grating soundââ¬âthe exact counterpart of what my fancy had already conjured up for the dragonââ¬â¢s unnatural shriek as described by the romancerâ⬠(23). Pajovic discusses Poeââ¬â¢s use of the supernatural in this manner. He writes, ââ¬Å"in Gothic literature, the function of the supernatural is mainly to turn the readerââ¬â¢s attention to the fact that something is not quite right with the world they live in and that the subsequent gruesome outcome is the direct result of the ill-doings that had taken place. Poeââ¬â¢s supernatural in the story in question is as outright as in any other work of the Gothic, as he is being mysterious about the mysteriousâ⬠(Pajovic 197). Poe also subtly suggests to the reader that Lady Madeline is not fully human, as it would be natural to assume given that she had been ill. However, when ââ¬Å"the lofty and enshrouded figure of the ladyâ⬠appears like a specter in the doorway, it becomes clear that she possesses supernatural abilities, even though Poe never writes this directly (25). Pajovic explains how the author accomplishes this with a set of minute grammatical cues, writing, ââ¬Å"Every single adjective that the writer uses to explain how Roderickââ¬â¢s sister was secured in her final resting place brings the audience one step closer to the realization that no mortal entity could free its elf from such bondageâ⬠(197). The presence of the supernatural in this short story is also closely intertwined with its sibling relationship. Like The Monk, ââ¬Å"The Fall of the House of Usherâ⬠also discusses family and contains an unhealthy and dangerous sibling relationship, although it is only implied that this may have been an incestuous one like Ambrosioââ¬â¢s and Antoniaââ¬â¢s. The narrator is aware that ââ¬Å"The entire [Usher] family lay in the direct line of descent,â⬠which is peculiar on its own, especially given the time period. Roderick and Matildaââ¬â¢s coexisting illnesses and their status as twins, which is not revealed until late in the plot when the latter dies, establishes them as a strongly emotionally connected pair, a concept that can seem supernatural in its own right. Pajovic addresses this concept as well, writing, ââ¬Å"A strong bond, sometimes referred to as ââ¬Å"the sixth senseâ⬠, between siblings gets amplified as Poeââ¬â¢s characters share such similar features, both physical and mental, that the reader gets the impression that they are one entityâ⬠(190) . This oneness becomes even more literal when Madeline throws herself onto her brother and they collapse together, conjoined in a mutual death. As mentioned in the discussion of the setting, their relationship is symbolized by the home, which began to crack as they became unstable and fell immediately upon their demise. Since the inception of the genre, Gothic literature has tended toward the dramatic in ways that has kept readers intrigued for centuries. These works have historically shared certain elements, including those mentioned: creepy and often miserable settings, the supernatural (and often its relation to religion), and twisted familial relationships, among others. The significant impact of the genreââ¬â¢s early works, particularly The Monk, on the literature of the next several hundred years is clear.

Through the development of a friendship and a journey for redemption between two young boys of different castes, The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, highlights the racial and class based tensions throughout Afghanistan and speaks to how irrational ethnic chasms can warp oners own sense of reality, ultimately leading to major strains on relationships and an internal sense of guilt. The Kite Runner, is set against a backdrop filled with hostility and commotion. From the fall of the monarchy is Afghanistan, the Soviet Invasion, the flood of Pakistani refugees into the United States, to the rise if the taliban, the reader travels through the history of Afghanistan and is exposed to the eye opening events that took place. In the Islamic religion, there are two main sects that which most fall under, the majority of them being Sunni, which makes up 85% of this religion across the world, while the Shia only make up about 15% of the Islamic population. This vast gap in the number that comprises all of its followers marginalizes the minority group, causing many people to discriminate against those who arent the same as themselves. This harsh division is brought to light in between the two main characters in the novel, Amir and Hassan. Amir is the son of a very wealthy father, and is a Pashtun, the dominant ethnic group in Afghanistan within the Sunni sect. They have tw o servants, Ali and his son, Hassan, who classify as Hazaras, the minority ethnicity in the city of Kabul, which fall under the Shia sect. These two boys have grown up together in the same household, practically as brothers, however they come from different religious, economic, and ethnic worlds. The main character in the novel, Amir is born and raised into a society filled with bigotry. He is subject to various views of the Hazaras throughout his childhood in Kabul, which greatly affects his views about ethnicity. School text books have essentially erased the Hazara ethnicity from history because they are seen as insignificant and teachers only mention them in passing or in disgust. Amirrs teacher wrinkled his nose when he said the word Shia, like it was some kind of disease, demonstrating the personal prejudices that Amir is exposed to (Hosseini 10). The negative connotation that is attached to this ethnic minority is inescapable, even in his own household. Amirrs father, Baba, a man of wealth and power, seems to put a lot of importance on their image. He puts himself above the lower classes for reasons that are not always religiously affiliated, but due to his skewed vision of the hierarchical society that he promotes. Baba never refers to Ali, his servant, as his friend even though they have practically known each other for the entirety of their lives. He fears the animosity he would receive if he placed himself as an equal of a much lower class, and for that reason he pushes his son to be the man he has made himself to be, to uphold his familyrs image. However, Baba is constantly unimpressed with Amirrs writing abilities and love of poetry and wishes his son was more like himself. Amir feels like he is constantly falling short of his fatherrs approval and strives to earn his love through the one thing he is good at, the annual kite tournament. Though on this day, the pressure of societal roles that are placed upon Amir cause him to make the decision that he will later regret for the rest of his life. Amir commits terrible sins against his lifelong friend that made him [become] what [he] is today at the age of twelve (Hosseini 1). The betrayal that he exhibits comes from his inherent cowardice of his character, and the distorted ideals about ethnicity he has been fed his whole life. On the day of the kite tournament, Amir wins the competition, only top lose his morality and bravery. He may have earned the approval from his father that he yearns for, but what he did not yet know is that he would lose his brotherhood and integrity in the process. While Hassan chases down the kite of the defeated opponent (a tradition of the sport), he is cornered by advocates by some teenagers of the Pashtun ethnicity who advocate for the suppression if the Hazaras. Assef holds horrible and unreasonable prejudices against Hassan due to his ethnicity and rapes the young boy, a humiliation meant to show Hassan his place in the order of life. (Inayatullah 333). Amir is a witness of these racial biased atrocities, but freezes, in fear that he will have to face the retribution of being associated with Hassan. This lack of advocacy that is exhibited by Amir parallels how our society allows for discrimination and heinous acts to go on without admission and without consequences. No one should be persecuted because of their race, religion, ethnicity, or beliefs, though, sadly it occurs everywhere around us. Hassan does not deserve this kind of monstrous treatment, nonetheless, he continues his loyalty and dedication to Amir. For his whole life, Hassan has grown up under prejudices held against him for being of the Hazara decent. Olszewska states that have been victims of ethno sectarian massacres by the Taliban and are easily recognized because their Mongolian features distinguish them from many of their neighbors. (42). Due to features like his flat nose, he cannot escape the viscous-natured names like mice-eating or load-carrying-donkeys (Hosseini 9). Despite the marginalization he faces every day, Hassan accepts his role in society and finds joy in his less-than-desired position. All he knows in life is to serve. His daily responsibilities entail preparing meals, readying Amirrs school books, chores and much more and as a result, he learns that it is he duty to sacrifice himself for others selflessly. Whether that be to serve and sacrifice as an attendant, friend, brother, or kite r unner, he does his job and he does it well. Hassan is strong, honorable, and brave and often acts as Amirrs bodyguard from bullies, however as time goes on and they grow older, there is a silent understanding him and his father, Ali, are seen as an embarrassment to the community. Regardless of the opinion of others, Hassan epitomizes the ideal servant, even after the horrible betrayal of Amir, he endures the pain, because of his unbroken allegiance towards him. One can tell just by reading the title of the novel that kites play a huge role in this story. On the plot level, the huge kite tournament of 1975 is what primarily sets us up for the rest of the story to unravel. After Hassan gets sexually abused while running down the kite that fell, Amir cannot separate his own cowardice and betrayal to Hassan after he witnesses the event and does nothing to stop it. However, beyond the plot, the kites have multiple layers to symbolism to them. One of these layers involves the class difference between the two boys, which largely dictates and limits their entire relationship. Amir said it himself that history isnt easy to overcome. Neither is religion. In the end, I was Pashtun and he was a Hazara, I was Sunni and he was Shia, and nothing was ever going to change that. Nothing. (Hosseini 25). He really doesnt even see Hassan as a normal friend because of their social differences, just like his father with Ali, which is reflected in their roles in kite flying. Hassan caters to Amirrs need in everyday life and while kite flying, however these kite-flying roles bring the boys together and symbolize the innocence of not being able to control where you come from. Another layer of this symbolism is the violent nature of kite flying. These boys are cutting themselves with glass, racing to pick up destroyed kites, and battling it out for a victory similarly to the conflicts that rage Afghanistan. The guilt that eats aways at Amir for making this one decision will change his life forever. Initially he cant even stand to look at Hassan after what he did to him because it reminds him of his lack of bravery. This causes him to selfishly craft a tale that frames Hassan for stealing from their family, which gets Hassan and Ali fired and forces them out of their home to be never seen or reunited again. Only thinking about himself, Amir wants to rid of his guilt and believes that this is the way to recover from it, to bury it deep down and never be reminded of it. However, the past is inescapable and is hardly forgotten. After many years go by, and Amir and his father have moved to the United States, this guilt that has built up ultimately leads to good. The move from Afghanistan to the United States symbolizes the transformation of a tragic story to one of hope and resilience. Amir wants nothing more than to redeem himself but he knows there is a long journey ahead to mend the shatt ered brotherhood that he dearly misses. Nancy Graves states that the Hosseini brilliantly lets us feel the paralysis of fear, then the paralysis of guilt and then finally embark on the road to recovery of both relationship with others and acceptance of ourselves. (49). The journey for atonement is definitely not one something that will be easy, but it will evoke self reflection and maturity. Regardless of the personal beliefs of each sect, both groups have immense pressure placed upon upholding the law of their religion and class. People have a tendency to act out of motivation by their own insecurities and fears, whether that be those of the Islamic faith who are terrified of failing to appear as a devoted believer of their sect or those who are preoccupied with power simply fearful of shame and a bad image. The relationship between the ethnicities is a microcosm for not only the society in Afghanistan, but our society as a whole. We have the tendency to reject those who are not the same, and often fail to speak up for the people who dont have the voices that will be heard. Rationality is warped by the strict social divisions that have bet set in our historical roots, but it is up to us to ignore the prejudices and not look at someone as an ethnicity, but as a person.

I will be using tweezers to place my seeds in the grid as these allow me to grip and place my seeds accurately. I plan to repeat each experiment (to obtain two results for each value). This is to restrict the chances of a faulty result skewing results. Ideally, I would repeat these tests many times, but as the experiment is quite slow, and placing too many petri dishes by my window might obscure the light available, Ive decided upon two results. The seeds will be grown for 7 days as my preliminary tests show that 7 days is perfectly adequate time for the cress seeds to germinate and grow to a measurable length. I plan to use cress seeds from the same packet throughout my experiment, as cress seeds found in different places may have different resistance to phosphates. This is because the detergent I am using may have been present in an irrigation system used to when the seeds were produced, and thus using a mixture of seeds would give a mixture of tolerances against phosphates. I plan to use the same amount of liquid throughout my experiment (20ml initially) as using varying amounts may affect my results. This is because plants need water to grow, and thus those with access to more water will probably grow both faster and further than those with less water. It is thus important to keep them as constant as possible. I have chosen to use 50 seeds at each concentration. This will reduce the chance of a percentage error. If using 10 seeds and one fails to germinate, this will be a 10% percentage error, whereas if one fails to germinate with 50 seeds, this gives only a 2% percentage error. This is a simple and effective way of reducing the percentage error. Sufficient replicates to assess reliability of data. Issues highlighted by my preliminary experiments Considering the results of my preliminary tests, I will be growing my cress inside by a window so that it has plenty of access to light and warmth. I will be growing my cress in petri dishes on two circular pieces of kitchen paper. I will be covering each dish with a piece of transparent film slightly larger than the dish itself. This is because the kitchen paper tends to dry out quickly, which would obviously prevent germination and negatively effect plant growth. The reason for using a piece of transparent film is because this will let light through. I will not be sealing these, as this will prevent air getting to the cress, which it requires for growth. This method prevents the seeds from drying out too quickly, although I will still be watering them at intervals specified before. In my preliminary tests, I measured the seed growth by their length above the seed and root length. However, this may not be accurate as some cress seedlings may have longer roots, and longer roots also indicate growth. For this reason I have decided to measure the shoot and root length combined of my seedlings. Ensuring consistancy I need to ensure that the amount of liquid present stays constant, and thus need to ensure that the dilutions of detergent liquid have appropriate amounts of distilled water. I will be using 20ml of water for the control, and various concentrations made up to 20ml for the other experiments. I need to ensure that the environment of the plants stays as consistent as possible throughout the experiment, and thus need to choose a window with enough space beneath it to give equal light to all the plants. I need to ensure that the cress is spread in the same way in each experiment. To give maximum space to each seed, I have chosen the following layout: This gives me enough room for 25 cress seeds in each experiment. I will need to ensure that the temperature around the petri dishes is kept constant between all petri dishes, as an inconsistency will have a small effect on growth. To do this, I shall measure the temperatures near each dish twice daily and record and adjust any anomalies. The petri dishes will need to be clearly labeled with concentration and experiment number (either 1 or 2) so as to avoid confusion when collecting results.
